Automats are back!

photo of Bamn automat

The rise and fall of automats almost exactly spans the 20th century...the first one opening in Philadelphia in 1902, the final one closing in 1991.

But now the automat is back! The Bamn automat just opened up in downtown Manhattan. The menu is part traditional automat fare (hamburgers, mac & cheese) and part asian (pork buns; Japanese-seasoned beef sliders). The food is housed inside glass-fronted vending machines, just like the old time automats.

Wonderful news, although I hate that Dunkin Donuts pink decor. I still remember lunches with my grandma at the mid-town Manhattan Horn&Hardart's -- it was one word, and that word was synonymous with hamburgers or chicken pot pies from behind the chrome and sliding glass of that little slice of Oz on Earth. My last visit was 1963, when my grandma, my mom, and I went to Radio City Music Hall to see The Pink Panther. The original one, a/k/a "the good one." After the movie, a surprise, lunch at the automat.

So now the automat is back, huh? Next time I'm in NYC, I'll check it out. But I still won't see the new version of the Pink Panther. Some things you can and should re-make, others can't be touched.

WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHERE, IF POSSIBLE, YOU CAN STILL GET HORN&HARDART'S BAKE BEANS. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THEY ARE STILL BEING MADE???
